If this is for real, someone on here needs to get this - I haven’t seen one like this in a long time. It’s also worth noting that if the faulty U joint is the same as one on a Sierra, it seems to be a part used on most European RWD Fords, so is pretty inexpensive

Same - I’ve seen cars worse than this one seems to be at 5x the price here in the UK. I’d love to own it

Man, I’d love to have one of these, all kinds of weird Ford.
There was a guy in a Capri group that said he had a 5k budget I was like I don’t want to sell my Capri AT ALL but for 5k I’d prolly sell it.

Same haha. Merkur did some weird stuff. But they aren’t quite as odd to me, since there was at least one on every street when I was growing up. They’ve almost all disappeared now unfortunately. It’s definitely on my list of cars I want to own someday

Haha, I actually saw it posted on another forum - chances are the person who posted it there found it on that page though.

better get one now then, they’re disappearing everyday.
Someone races one in Detroit area SCCA RallyX where I plan to race my Capri.
I don’t remember seeing a Merkur in person ever in my life lol.

Yeah. They’re certainly not getting any more common, and I’ve heard they make very competitive rally cars, so a lot end up being taken off the road and raced (not that this is a bad thing, obviously). I don’t think I’ve seen a Merkur either, unless somebody imported one or something. Though I do remember thousands of Ford Sierras, which are now an equally uncommon sight, especially in good shape

That is an insanely good price. I’m not going to be in Portland again till Friday but I might have to try to convince my dad to give this a look for me

Yeah I’d definitely race one. The big draw to a Fox platform car (My Capri) is the part availability/interchangeability on it. I can use Mustang parts from 1979-1997 depending on the parts. Having the ability to hit a junk yard for parts through almost 20 years is so epic, we all know things break while racing!

There’s definitely a lot of appeal to cars with cheap, simple parts you can get anywhere, especially with such a vast aftermarket like the fox body - if you decide you want to go quicker, there’s thousands of interchangeable parts you can use. I imagine that just getting anything beyond simple maintenance parts for a Merkur would take a lot of money, research and planning before you got the right bit.

Normally I’d just wait but I’m worried it’ll go.. Assuming the u-joint is the only issue that’s way too good to pass up.

Well, it has the turbo 2.3L which was featured in the fox body in the Mustang, Capri, and Thunderbirds so parts are around, just a lot of work. Fox is the easiest way for pretty much anyone to go racing.

Trying to talk my friend into splitting the cost. It’s close enough to where I work that I could pick it up on my lunch break.

Yeah. I don’t think it’ll be long until it sells at that price. My main worry would be other problems the seller hasn’t mentioned - rust being the worst scenario. These cars weren’t great in terms of rustproofing, and there’s huge pieces of plastic trim that could have some serious rot lurking behind them
(Hopefully not though, I prefer to imagine this being some incredible deal instead haha)

Oh I’m sure I wouldn’t shut up about it. Logistics and timing might be too much to overcome before we go on a trip for the holidays(car is 100 miles away). It’s kind of like what I posted the other day(albeit about a different German 80s coupe) -

He says it’s been in the Portland area its entire life, cars tend to stay rust free because they never salt the roads.

Oh yeah. I forget that engine was used in so many cars. Am I right in saying that other non-turbo variations found there way into a lot of Ford’s other offerings?
That said though, production of 2.3 turbo foxes wasn’t nearly as high as other engines, so the Mustang/Capri is probably a much easier way into motorsports

Nice! Should be alright in that case. Then again though, it’s an older Ford, so who knows? Haha

Yeah, it’s so annoying, isn’t it? Loads of cars I like seem to be appearing lately, but because it’s near to Christmas, I don’t really have the time or money for any of it :(

I have a 1991 4Runner that doesn’t have a single patch of rust. But again, who knows. The picture is misleading because it’s in the snow, realistically it only snows enough to accumulate once a year in Portland, if even that. They got the yearly snow this past week

I was born in the ‘80s and grew up in the Portland area. Merkurs of both types (XR4Ti and Scorpio) weren’t unusual sights, even up through the early twenty-noughts.
Then again, I remember seeing Fiat Stradas, 131s & 128s, Sterlings, SD1's and P6's, Lancia Betas, Alfa GTV’s, Milanos, and 164's when I was growing up around Portland.
There’s even a Citroen-head in SE Portland who has several DSes (including a Safari), an SM, a grey-market CX, a grey-market GS, and a couple of H-vans in front of his place in various states of repair.
Portland is a fantastic home for oddball cars.

It is. I mean, there are Outbacks and Priuses as far as the eye can see. But if you’re eagle-eyed, you’ll still see some interesting metal around.

I was in the market for anything that tickled my fancy. What changed was I decided to have professional fix my Jeep to make it a daily driver so I can buy a stupid project car soon.
